World Day Against Child Labour: Major Crackdown Leads to Rescue of 20 Minors in Chhattisgarh
Raipur, June 13, 2026: On the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour, the Chhattisgarh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights launched a statewide special drive against child labour, leading to the rescue of 20 minor children from different locations across the state. Authorities have also initiated an investigation into possible human trafficking links in the case.
The major operation was carried out under the leadership of Commission Chairperson Dr. Varnika Sharma at Maruti Nandan Structure Industries in Raipur’s Urla Industrial Area. During a surprise inspection, officials found minor children engaged in hazardous work in violation of labour laws. Nine children were rescued from the factory and produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) for further care and protection.
Apart from the Raipur operation, seven children were rescued in Bilaspur with the assistance of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), while four others were rescued by the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Raipur, taking the total number of rescued children to 20.

9 Children Rescued from Industrial Unit
During the inspection, officials found nine minors working in an iron manufacturing facility under unsafe conditions. The children were immediately taken into protective custody and presented before the Child Welfare Committee.
Statewide Rescue Operation Saves 20 Children
The coordinated statewide campaign resulted in the rescue of 20 children from various locations, highlighting the state’s intensified efforts to eliminate child labour.
Children Brought from Other States
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the rescued children belonged to Odisha, Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, and Asansol in West Bengal. The children informed authorities that they had been brought to Raipur by a contractor from Bihar.

Human Trafficking Angle Being Investigated
The Commission has launched an investigation into the role of the contractor and other individuals involved in bringing the children to Chhattisgarh. Officials are examining possible links to organized child trafficking networks.
Legal Action Under Juvenile Justice Act
Authorities have initiated legal proceedings under Sections 75, 79, and 143 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. Further investigation is underway to determine violations related to child labour and human trafficking laws.

Strict Action Against Offenders
Dr. Varnika Sharma stated that child labour is a grave violation of children’s rights, particularly when minors are forced to work in hazardous industries. She emphasized that every child has the right to a safe childhood, quality education, and a life of dignity. The Commission remains committed to eliminating child labour and child trafficking and ensuring strict legal action against those responsible.
