Monsoon Safety: Chhattisgarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights Directs Officials to Secure Open Pits and Construction Sites


Raipur, July 1, 2026: With the onset of the monsoon, the Chhattisgarh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) has launched a proactive campaign to safeguard children from hazards posed by open pits, construction sites, and overflowing drains.


The Commission has issued urgent directives to the Urban Administration and Development Department, all District Collectors, and urban local bodies, emphasizing the heightened risks children face during the rainy season.
Urgent Need for Safety Measures
SCPCR Chairperson Dr. Varnika Sharma highlighted that water-filled pits pose a significant danger to children, who often cannot gauge the depth of the water while playing or commuting to school.

“The risk of accidents increases manifold during the rains. It is imperative that we identify all dangerous spots and implement immediate safety measures to prevent any untoward incidents,” said Dr. Sharma.
Key Directives Issued:
To ensure child safety, the Commission has mandated the following actions:
Secure Barricading: All ongoing construction sites and open pits must be enclosed with sturdy barricades and safety fencing.
Accountability: Construction agencies and residential colony managements are strictly required to ensure that no excavation work is left open and unprotected.
Deployment of Personnel: In highly sensitive or high-risk construction areas, the Commission has recommended the deployment of security guards to prevent children from wandering near hazardous zones.
Constant Monitoring: District administrations have been instructed to conduct regular reviews and maintain continuous surveillance of urban areas.


Deadline for Compliance
The Commission has requested a comprehensive report on the safety measures implemented from the Urban Administration and Development Department and local authorities.
The report, which must be submitted by July 7, 2026, is expected to detail the identification of open pits, the status of barricading, safety arrangements, and the monitoring protocols adopted across the state.
